Game of Thrones (2011) - Season 6 Epic Finale Delivers Revenge

The Game of Thrones Season 6 finale "Winds of Winter" is awesome beyond words and compensates for every slow episode that the series has featured in the past. The primary theme of the finale is revenge and kills off several vicious characters who outlived their existence in the fantasy series.

Cersei Finally Sits on the Iron Throne

Cersei gets her revenge on every single people who tormented her in King's Landing. It starts with Grand Maester Pycelle getting lured into Qyburn's laboratory where his little birds (child spies) stabs the perverted old maester.

On the other side of the city, hundreds of citizens gathers at the Sept of Baelor to witness the trial of Loras Tyrell and Cersei Lannister by the Sparrow fanatics. As Loras pledges his lifetime commitment to the Faith, Margaery notices that neither Cersei nor Tommen are present at the trial. She senses that something is utterly wrong and tries to escape with Loras but the Sparrows stop them.

Meanwhile, one of Qyburn's little birds lures Lancel Lannister to the underground chambers below the Sept of Baelor. Stabbed in the dark by the kid, Lancel realises that chamber is loaded with hundreds of barrels containing Wildfire waiting to be set alight. He struggles to reach the burning candles but it is too late, the deadly green Wildfire rips through the chambers above and into the streets of King's Landing, killing all sparrows and everyone else present in the Sept and its vicinity.

Wildfire explodes through King's Landing

As Cersei stands in her Red Keep balcony sipping wine, she relishes the explosive scene unfold before her eyes. She has successfully destroyed all her enemies - the sparrows, Margaery, everyone. Tommen is safe in his chambers, guarded by the Mountain, Sir Gregor Clegane. But her revenge is not over, she goes down to the basement to visit Septa Unella who lies tied up on a table. Cersei promises Unella that she will die a slow and cruel death, and leaves the room uttering "shame" after unleashing the zombie-like Sir Gregor Clegane on her, probably to be raped and tortured to death.

Tommen cannot imagine a world without his beloved Margaery

As the newly crowned Queen sits on the Iron Throne, we see Cersei in a whole new light. Her one redeeming quality was the love for her children. With Tommen jumping from his Red Keep chambers after watching the Wildfire explosion, Cersei no longer has any children. Completely devoid of any emotions, the new Cersei is a stone-cold far more ruthless ruler whose vengeful reign has only begun.

Arya Stark Avenges the Red Wedding

Walder Frey is one character in the series who had absolutely no redeeming quality. Marrying his own children to extend his family line, this ghastly pervert of an old man is remembered for having Catelyn Stark, Robb Stark and his pregnant wife Talisa killed under his own roof, violating the guest right in the worst possible way.

Walder Frey cheers for the Freyas and the Lannisters, clearly he has no idea what is coming.

As he raises a toast to celebrate their victory at Riverrun, he announces "the Freys and the Lannisters send their regards", a sentence that was repeated by him on the night of the Red Wedding. But there is no joy seen in Jamie Lannister as he insults Walder Frey and bluntly points out how useless the Freys are to the Lannisters.

Arya Stark crosses off Walder Frey from her list

Later in the night, as Walder Frey sits alone in his party hall drinking, a servant girl comes and serves him his meat pie. He looks for his sons and the servant girl calmly points to the meat-pie and says "they were difficult to carve". The girl is none other than Arya Stark in disguise. She slits the throat of the choking Walder Frey who has just feasted on his own sons, serving poetic justice to Walder Frey, one of the most hated characters in Game of Thrones.

King of the North

Sansa Stark and Jon Snow have a heart-to-heart conversation and she encourages him to take up leadership in Winterfell. Littlefinger approaches Sansa in the woods and proclaims his dream of sitting on the Iron Throne with Sansa by his side. But Sansa turns him down and walks away, even as Littlefinger tries to convince her that she is future of the North as Jon Snow is a bastard and does not deserve to rule the North.

All the rulers in the North pledge their allegiance to Jon Snow starting with Lady Mormont. They name him the "White Wolf" and the new the King in the North, as Littlefinger looks on with displeasure.

Jon Snow declared King in the North

We also come to know Jon Snow's parentage. Bran sees in one of his visions that Lyanna Stark gives birth to a baby boy and makes her brother Ned Stark promise to adopt and raise the boy as his own. So it is confirmed that Jon Snow is indeed a Stark.

Daenarys Sets Sail for Westeros

Strong alliances are sealed in Game of Thrones Season 6 finale. The previous episode "Battles of the Bastards" had seen Yara and Theon Greyjoy offer their loyalty and their ships to Daenarys in return for the Iron Islands. The finale sees lady Ollena Tyrell in Dorne sitting with the Dorne matriarch Ellaria Sand. As Ellaria promises to help Ollena get revenge on the Lannisters for killing the only heirs to the Tyrell house, Margaery and Loras Tyrell, Lord Varys makes his appearance and requests them to join Daenarys and her forces setting sail for Westeros.

Daenarys sets sail to Westeros, finally!!

Meanwhile, back in Meereen, Daenarys breaks up with Daario Naharis citing that he would be better off keeping peace in Meereen while Daenys strikes up alliances which may include marriage in Westeros. As the unhappy Daarios takes his leave, Daenarys appoints Tyrion Lannister as the Hand of the Queen. With the Greyjoys, the Unsullied and her three dragons, Daenarys, Tyrion and Varys finally set sail for Westeros.

Since Varys is back with Daenarys, we can safely assume that the Martells and the Tyrells have also joined Daenarys and her army. This event marks the biggest alliance ever formed in Game of Thrones and sets the background for one of the most epic wars to be seen in Westeros - the fight between the Dragons and the Lions.
