Game of Thrones (2011) - Top 5 Most Awesome Characters

Tyrion Lannister

Tyrion the Imp is one of the most entertaining characters in Game of Thrones. With his outrageous sense of humour and sarcasm, acute cynicism and excellent wit, he delivers the best punchlines of the series. His intense love for wine and the ability to hold his drinks only elevates our respect for him. In his own words - it's not easy being drunk all the time. If it was, everyone would do it.

Achievements and adventures:
  • Gets kidnapped by Catelyn Stark and imprisoned by Lysa Arryn of Vale.
  • Demands trial by combat and wins Bronn as his sellsword and body-guard.
  • Manages to defeat Stannis Baratheon's army with wildfire.
  • Forced into marriage with the ever-tormented Sansa Stark.
  • Gets accused of Joffrey's murder by his father and sister.
  • Gets betrayed by his lover Shae, who testifies against him and shags his father.
  • Kills his father with a cross-bow while he was taking a dump.
  • Strangles his unfaithful girlfriend while she is still in his father's bed.
  • Escapes King's Landing with the help of Jaime and Varys.
  • Gets kidnapped by Jorah and delivered to Daenerys, pledges his allegiance to her.
  • Joins hands with Varys to bring peace to Meereen when she goes MIA on her dragon.
  • Fails to stop the Sons of the Harpy killings but gain her trust for his sincere efforts.
  • Gets appointed as the Hand of the Queen, sails for Westeros with Daenerys and group.
Greatest strength:   wit, diplomacy and gift of the gab.
Greatest weakness: drinking and whoring, till he meets Shae.
Love of his life:       wine, of course, and Shae, till she betrays him
Ambition in life:     start a winery and name his speciality "the Imp's delight".

Oberyn Martell

Oberyn is the Prince of Dorne and the second Martell son. He and his lover lady Ellaria Sand visits King's Landing for a short period of time. But in that very short duration, we see his awesomeness through his very open, yet devoted, relationship with his lady and his love for all things fancy and exotic. But the flashy prince is not all about show-off and hedonism alone.

He shows his true grit when he offers to fight the Mountain for Tyrion's trial by combat, proving himself to be the most courageous man in King's Landing when the likes of Jaime and Bronn were too scared to fight the giant monster. In this case though, Prince Oberyn's courage leads to his doom. A split second's mistake of victory triumph caused him to overlook the fact that his enemy was still alive, leading to his brain literally getting squashed in the hands of the Mountain, one of the most ghastly and shocking killings in Game of Thrones.

Greatest strength:   fighting skills
Greatest weakness: different forms of hedonism
Love of his life:       Ellaria Sand
Ambition in life:     eat, drink and be merry

Petyr Baelish

The most charming and diabolical villain of the century award easily goes to Littlefinger. He plays the long game and his ultimate goal is to sit on the Iron Throne with Sansa Stark by his side. He likes to orchestrate chaos and uses it as a ladder to proceed towards his goals. He manipulates his enemies by keeping them confused.

Achievements and adventures:
  • Convinces Lysa to poison her husband Jon Arryn, and write to Catelyn blaming the Lannisters.
  • Provides false leads to Ned Stark to pursue the Lannisters in Jon Arryn's murder investigation.
  • Betrays Ned Stark after promising him allegiance of the king's guard soldiers.
  • Sets up alliance between Margaery Tyrell and Joffrey.
  • Tries to make Sansa Stark leave King's Landing with him.
  • Learns about Margaery's plan to get Sansa married to her brother Loras Tyrell.
  • Leaks the information to Cersei who forces Tyrion to marry Sansa.
  • Conspires with the Tyrells to get Joffrey poisoned on his wedding day.
  • Smuggles off Sansa from King's Landing and takes her to Lysa Arryn in Vale.
  • Pushes Lysa off the moon-door when she tries to kill Sansa in a fit of jealousy.
  • Marries off Sansa to Ramsay Bolton to show his support to the Boltons.
  • Offers Sansa the Vale army in an attempt to earn her forgiveness.
  • Helps Jon Snow to defeat the Boltons, gaining back Sansa's trust to some extent.
Greatest strength:   devil's mind, foresight, treachery, manipulation
Greatest weakness: Sansa Stark
Love of his life:       Catelyn Stark, Sansa Stark
Ambition in life:     sit on the Iron Throne of Westeros with Sansa by his side

Olenna Tyrell

Lady Olenna Tyrell is the Tyrell matriarch who immediately endears herself to the viewers with her quick wit, biting sarcasm and apathy towards the Lannisters. The wisdom, practical thinking and sense of humour that the old lady displays makes her a delight to watch and a character you simply cannot ignore. As Margaery's grandmother, she worry about Margaery marrying a psyhotic king like Joffrey is completely justified. She recruits Petyr Baelish to have Joffrey poisoned on his wedding day, a conspiracy that makes all the Joffrey haters admire her even more. Our adoration knows no bounds as she delivers her most scathing remarks to Cersei right before leaving King's Landing at Margaery's warning, calling Cersei the "most horrible person she has ever known".

Greatest strength:   Sharp wit, insightful thinking,
Greatest weakness: Her grandchildren Margaery and Loras
Love of her life:       Margaery and Loras
Ambition in life:      See Margaery rule Westeros and Loras marry a suitable high-born "girl".

Achievements and adventures:
  • Plans to get Sansa married to Loras to gain control of the Starks, but does seem to have genuine sympathy for Sansa's miserable situation.
  • After Sansa is forcibly married to Tyrion, she brainwashes Tywin Lannister to get Loras married to Cersei, a clever move that fails to take off.
  • Plots with Petyr Baelish to get Joffrey poisoned on his wedding day to rescue Margaery from the psycho.
  • Pushes Margaery to seduce Tommen, the next in-line to the throne.
  • Sees benefit in allying with Varys and backing Daenerys Targaryen.
  • Goes to Dorne to team up with Ellaria Sand for avenging their common enemy, Cersei Lannister, after losing Margaery and Loras to the wildfire explosion in King's Landing.

Bronn the Mercenary

Bronn is first introduced in Game of Thrones as a sell-sword who offers to fight for Tyrion in a trial by combat at the Vale. He is a good fighter and freely admits his love for money and women. He is a delightful character whose continuous banter and sarcastic humour with Tyrion Lannister keeps us entertained for several seasons. He acts as Tyrion's bodyguard for a greater part of the show and does seem to have genuine affection for Tyrion.

After Tyrion's imprisonment however, he refuses to help him, probably because he has been paid off by Cersei or is too scared to fight the Mountain, something he cannot be blamed for entirely. He is later seen to fight for Jaime Lannister who becomes a changed man and a much more honourable person, thanks to Brienne of Tarth, and knights Bronn for his valour in the Battle of Blackwaters.

Greatest strength:   fighting skills
Greatest weakness: money
Love of his life:       money
Ambition in life:     become a lord by marrying a rich lady
